"Guns loaded......ready....aim......fire!" the officer shouted, then shot his own gun in the air, signaling the start. Our heavy earmuffs that blocked even the loudest of sounds were placed on each person’s ear. We were lined up, the ten of us. We all shot at our targets located approximately fifty feet away from us, shaped in the form of a human body. Circles were drawn on them, with numbers above the rings. The heart, 50, the head, 40, the stomach 30, the arms, each scoring 10, and the legs, a 5. I looked through the aim of my gun, and shot a few rounds hitting the head, then moved my gun slightly to the right, shooting on the arm.
"One minute remaining!" the officer shouted again, looking at his timer he held in his hand. I sighed, and picked up the other automatic we could shoot from. A small hand gun. I held onto that with both hands, separated my legs, crunched my knees, and took a couple good shots aiming at the heart, hoping to hit it at least once.
I looked to my right, and saw my rival, Alejro, doing his best, shooting only at the head and a few occasional shots to the heart. I shook my head. Always trying to outdo someone. Gritting my teeth, I shot more at the heart, my palms getting sweaty with my secure grip. I took one last shot, accidently shooting in between the legs, before the officer’s gun was shot in the air, giving a loud, pitching noise. A noise distinct from our own guns so we knew when our practice was over and time was up. Everyone placed their guns back in their holsters, and waited to be critiqued by the other officers walking out of the soundproof room a few feet behind us.
"Wayne, what were you aiming at?" Alejro walked near the small plank of wood that separated us. It was touching the ground and standing up, only coming up to the waist. His lips were curved and his eyes squinting. He pointed at my target and started chuckling. I rolled my eyes.
"I missed the leg. Simple as that," I spoke irritated, not wanting to hear his words. He shook his head and started cracking his fingers, getting the stress out of them for the possible next round.
"Actually, I think you were aiming there the whole time," he cracked, shaking his head from side to side, laughing at his own joke, which I didn’t find funny at all.
"Well, what do you call that shot over there," I made him turn around sharply, staring at his own target, wondering what I was talking about.
"I don’t see anything wrong with it," he answered, smiling and turning back to me.
"No, look over there," I pointed my finger, to the target next to his, on the right. He turned his head around too.
"Alejro, seems like someone needs more practice." I smirked, feeling a gain in this discussion. There was a purple mark on the guy’s target. The purple mark coming from Alejro’s gun.
He balled his fists and slammed them on the wood.
"You know, if we were in the real thing, and you missed your target like that, shooting some innocent pedestrian, or worse, a hostage, you’ll get fired." My smile intensified, seeing him at his worse. One of the leading officers walked towards our booths, and gave us a clipboard. Our score was upon it, circled in red ink.
"An 824?" I questioned, not believing how my scores just started to plummet. For the past three days, I haven’t scored anything above a 1,000. Alejro overheard, and snickered, but cut it short seeing his own score. His smile faded.
"Wait! Are you sure? Is this mines or someone else’s?" he questioned, jumping over the board so he could catch up with the officer, running behind him with his paper outstretched in his hands. I shook my head at his antics and got out of my booth, closing the plastic door behind me.
"Hey you."
Someone whispered in my ear...
