"Damien," she groaned out his name, sitting Indian-style on the bed they shared together with a pillow in her lap. She tilted her head to the side and continued watching him. His back was facing her and hunched over the mahogany desk in their room. Papers were scattered all over the surface.

"Damien baby..." she spoke again, hoping for an answer. Again, he ignored her–he was too trapped in his work to notice what was happening around him. His pen scraped against the paper that he was writing on, and she knew that he was too far gone to come back to reality. Aloree sighed and rested her chin in the palm of her hand. Her eyes darted towards the clock. 1:00 a.m. flickered on the screen. She peeked over her shoulder towards their window and saw the moonlight positioned over the distant treetops. After a minute of gazing, her attention was brought back to Damien.

She didn’t understand why he had to work so much. It was like this every night. He would bring home some papers from his workplace, and fill them out at home. When she questioned him as to why he never completed them at work, he would simply say that he never had time.

That was just it, he never had time for her. She always felt disappointed when he came home. Sure, Aloree was happy for him, with the stable job that he had and the salary he received, but she wanted more from him.

So much more.

When the clock hit 1:30, Aloree couldn’t take it anymore. She got out of the bed and headed towards his desk. Reaching over his head, she ran her fingers along the base of the lamp until she could find the switch. When she felt it, she flicked it off, and immediately, their room turned into total darkness. She smirked and turned on her heels to go back to bed, but, before she could even walk past him, she felt his hand grab her wrist. A smile graced her lips feeling his warm touch on her skin.

She was finally getting what she wanted. As painfully little as it was, he was showing her the attention she desired.

"Aloree, what did I tell you about turning off my reading light?" his words came out cold and Aloree practically squealed in delight hearing her name drawn from his lips.

"Damien, it’s nearly two o’clock. You need to get some sleep," she grabbed his hand and tried pulling him out of his leather, swivel chair, but he was too strong for her.

"I’m perfectly fine," he yanked her hold from his hand and turned back around towards his desk.

"No you’re not. I know your eyes were straining reading under all of that light. You didn’t even have your reading glasses on," Aloree shifted to his other side and felt around on the miniature shelf. She grabbed his glasses case and waved them in her hands.

"I don’t need those things," Damien spat, irritated. It was obvious that he was annoyed, but Aloree continued on. She needed to have him leave his desk and get in bed, with her.

"Damien, please. You can finish this later," Aloree whined, making another attempt to grab his hand and drag him out of his seat and to their bed.

He wouldn’t budge. Instead, he pushed her away from him; not enough force to hurt, but enough to know that he meant business.

"Aloree! Would you please stop with that?! Damn it! Just get in bed and sleep already. I’ll sleep when I’m finished," Damien yelled, much louder than intended. He knew he was upsetting Aloree, but she was upsetting him twice as much. He only wished she would understand that when he was working, he did not like to be interrupted. Throughout his life, he fought to be in the position at his job he was currently in. After five years, he finally was promoted, and he would not let anything, or anyone mess him up. Even if that meant Aloree.

"I hate you!" she screeched, throwing the case she still clutched in her hand towards him. It soared through the air, softly grazing his head, and hit the wall in front of him. When it hit the wall, the case opened, and the glasses fell from the holder. They fell onto the wooden desk and one of the clear lenses broke. Damien rolled his eyes and drowned her anger out by going back to work.

"I hate you, Damien!" she wished he would turn around and at least look at her. Instead, he turned his reading lamp back on, picked up his pen, and continued writing where he left off.

She stood there with her arms crossed over her chest in disbelief, anger, and hatred. She knew it was useless to get him away from his studies, so, to occupy her mind, she did the only thing she could think of doing.

She walked out of their room and headed to their office so she could log onto her computer.
